The Play
Ernest and Delia go out to celebrate their anniversary, while their intensely incoherent son Trevor and his neurotic wife Susannah (who are immersed in severe compatibility problems) attend a house-warming party at Malcolm and Kate’s. The party is also attended by Jan, who once came close to marrying Trevor, and whose husband Nick is prevented from attending with her by a bad back which confines him to bed. The play is constantly cross-cut among the bedrooms of Ernest and Delia, Malcolm and Kate and Nick and Jan, as they are invaded during the course of a long night by Trevor and Susannah and their marital mess. In the process, the relationships between the natural inhabitants of the three bedrooms are inevitably stretched and infected.
This is vintage Alan Ayckbourn written when he was at the peak of his talent. As with most of his plays the characters are based on reality and the fun emanates from their individual personalities and the situations in which they find themselves. It is one hilarious round of comedy and chaos.
All 8 roles are rewarding and require style, comic timing, but an ability to stay real. We had great fun when we did it in 1982 at the Little Theatre (Yes! We did get three bedrooms on the small stage)
